Do Pi Ka: Native Origins of Shawnee County – An Illustrated Map by Becki Waugh

“Do Pi Ka” means “Where we are” — and this public artwork helps us understand exactly that.

This illustrated map explores the Native origins of Shawnee County, Kansas, honoring the rich histories of the Kanza, Osage, Delaware, Potawatomi, Shawnee, and Wyandotte peoples who have called this land home.

Created by artist Becki Waugh, the piece blends storytelling and place-making through vibrant illustration. Designed as public art, the map is meant to be accessible, educational, and engaging — inviting viewers of all ages to learn about the Indigenous presence in the region.

Artists' Illustrated Topeka is a contemporary view of the Capital City of Kansas (2024). This art piece is meticulously rendered to depict the landmarks, neighborhoods, byways, and energy of the place. Featuring popular pastimes in the city parks, modes of transportation and industry, and annual cultural celebrations this illustration was created to honor the people, the moment, and the artists' hometown.

Points of interest within this drawing include, schools, hospitals, churches, cemeteries, parks, museums, and events including the Sunflower State Games, Huff N. Puff, The Duck Race, and the annual firework display over Shawnee Lake.

Illustrated maps are powerful tools for connection. They tell stories not just with words, but with imagery that sparks curiosity and reflection. This project brings history to life in a way that is both beautiful and meaningful, serving as a lasting tribute to the cultures that shaped the land we call home.
